공자는 너무나 유명한 사람인 것을 잘 알고 들 있다. 그런데 몇가지 특이한 사항이 있다.
우선 그 당시에는 아무도 그의 생각을 안 받아들였다는 것이다. 시대적으로 그의 사상이 맞지 않든지, 공자에 대한 인격적 신뢰가 안되었는지 간에, 아무튼 그는 그 당시에 받아들여지지 않았다.
그러나 그는 계속 가르치며 자신의 사상을 전개했다. 본인은 맞다고 생각했으며 그 당시와 미래를 위해 필요하다고 확신했던 것이다. 내적으로 인(仁)을 외적으로는 예(禮)를 계속 강조했다. 그러나 사람들은 그것을 무시했다.
그런데 지금은 모두들 공자를 존경하고 그의 뜻을 따르려고 애쓰고 있다. 공자의 말과 뜻이 틀리다고 지금 생각하는 사람은 없다. 결국 틀리냐 맞냐의 문제가 아니라 필요하냐 안 필요하냐의 문제 라볼 수도 있겠다. 즉 시간의 문제라 본다. 지금은 공자의 뜻을 따르지 못하는 자신과 현실을 책망하고 있는 것이다.
이런 내용을 생각하면서 중요한 교훈을 얻곤한다. 첫째, 확신을 갖는 일이라면 끝까지 밀고 나가야 한다는 것이다. 둘째, 사람들은 이해 못할 수도 있다. 셋째, 시간이 많이 흐른 다음 때가 되면 사람들은 이해하게 된다. 그리고 그것을 받아들이게 된다.
예를들어 멜빈목사님을 보자. 이 경우는 살아계실때도 영향력이 있었고 많은 교회들을 도우며 비젼을 펼쳤는데, 세상을 떠나신 직후는 좀 주춤했는데 최근 들어서는 그의 사역이 다시 살아나는듯 하다.
2015년에 나가랜드에 PACE신학교가 개교했고
2015년에 멜빈목사님께서 하늘나라로 가셨고
2021년에 케냐에 멜빈대학교가 개교했다.
지금이 2025년이니 나가랜드 PACE 신학교는 벌써 10년이 지났고, 케냐 멜빈대학교도 5년차가 되면서 서서히 안정권으로 들어가고 있다.
두 학교다 정착되어 안정권에 들어가니 나는 멜빈목사님의 자료와 사역에 재매진하면서 재부팅이 시작되고 있다. 한마디로 멜빈목사님은 세상을 떠나셨지만 그와 그의 사역은 다시 날개를 단듯, 그리고 그 사역의 가치가 재조명되면서 마치 하늘 나라의 별빛처럼 반짝이고 있다.
이렇게 되는 것은 비록 세상은 떠났더라도 그분들의 제자와 후배들이 재조명하면 다시 부활시키는 수고와 노력이 있었기에 가능해진다.
Posthumous rather than contemporary
We all know that Confucius is a very famous person. But there are some unusual things about him.
First of all, no one accepted his ideas in his time. Whether it was because his ideas didn’t fit the times, or because they didn’t trust him as a person, he wasn’t accepted at the time.
But he continued to teach and develop his ideas. He was convinced that they were right and necessary for the time and for the future. He continued to emphasise inwardness (仁) and outwardness (禮). But people ignored it.
But now everyone admires Confucius and tries to follow his will. No one now thinks that what Confucius said and meant was wrong. In the end, it’s not a matter of right or wrong, but of necessary or not necessary, which is a matter of time. For now, we are blaming ourselves and reality for not following Confucius’ will.
When I think about this, I often learn important lessons. First, if you are convinced of something, you should push through to the end. Second, people may not understand. And third, after a long time, when the time is right, they will understand. And they accept it.
Take Pastor Melvin, for example. When he was alive, he was very influential and helped many churches and had a vision, but after he passed away, his ministry kind of faded away, but recently it seems to be reviving.
In 2015, PACE Seminary opened in Nagaland.
In 2015, Pastor Melvin went to heaven.
In 2021, Melvin University opened in Kenya.
It is now 2025, so PACE Seminary in Nagaland is already 10 years old, and Melvin University in Kenya is in its fifth year and is slowly entering a period of stability.
Now that both schools are settled and stable, I am rebooting by re-dedicating myself to Pastor Melvin’s resources and ministry. In short, although he has passed away, he and his ministry have regained wings and are shining like stars in the sky as the value of his work is rediscovered.
This is because even though they are gone from the world
This is possible because of the labour and efforts of his disciples and successors to resurrect him when he is revisited.
